Ordering DashScan II

Ordering

Thanks for your interest in DashScan2, but unfortunately you can't just go ahead and order one. I am not a business, I have built these things in my spare time, for the heck of it, for fellow Fiero enthusiasts. Stocking these expensive buggers would have meant tying up heaps of money on the vague hope that somebody will someday buy whatever stock I have built. Building a stack of units would save a little in volume discounts, true, but I'd still have ended up with hundreds of dollars worth of unsold parts, cancelling any advantage that volume discounts may have yielded (we're talking quantities of tens here anyway).

Oh, and in case you were wondering, no freebies. Sorry. No matter if you work for Microsoft or Gadgets, Inc. and do testing for a living, or promise me publicity and a candlelight dinner with Kate Beckinsale. Remember, I am not a company, so I can't write anything off.

Still tuned it? Good, there is still hope left if you want one. I have a few blank circuit boards left that you can use to build your own. These are professionally made, double-sided boards, and most of the components are standard, off-the-shelf stuff. Even the LED modules, even though no longer available for me over here, are still available through Digi-Key (the part numbers are SLO2016 for orange, SLG2016 for green and SLY2016 for yellow, and you need two of these for one DashScan). As for the controllers, I can supply you with programmed CPUs at cost, or program CPUs that you supply. If you want to solder yourself, you need to have experience with surface mount parts, and general electronics know-how, in case things don't work initially.

For the display unit, everything you need is online if you click on the Display item in the navigation bar on the left. When you have that working, you only need a base DashScan2 board to be all set.

So drop me a line via email, and get in touch with me with any questions you may have. I'll be happy to respond, but please bear in mind that since I'm doing this as a hobby and service to fellow Fiero enthusiasts, that I may not always respond immediately although I try to.

Mileage chip

If you are lucky and own an 86-88 V6, and your PROM supports it, you can install a mileage coprocessor that will enable DashScan to calculate and display your current mileage. So far all 86-88 ECMs have output that information, but I don't know if there are any PROMs out there that don't. Your ECM must be part number 1227170, others don't work! The bad news is that the Atmel AT90S2343 controller used for this project has been discontinued, and the successor made a few software changes necessary, which I have not tested yet.

Inside Temperature sensor

DashScan has two kinds of temperature sensors, inside and outside. Both are Dallas Semiconductor DS1820 or DS18S20, if you want to add the outside temperature sensor later. The inside temperature sensor is installed on the Dashscan main board, which makes sense, since the board is installed in the car. But if you want to measure the temperature in a different location, you need to mount the sensor remotely. If you want a remote temperatur sensor, you have to do the wiring yourself, so you will receive the sensor integrated circuit and connector shells, and you will have to do the wiring yourself, which requires soldering wires of the required length to the sensor as well as connector shells on the other end of the wiring.

Email me with the subject "DashScan" for details.
